Chinese journalist Dong Yuyu has been sentenced to seven years in prison for espionage, a conviction his family describes as "patently absurd." Dong, a 62-year-old veteran writer and former Harvard fellow, was known for his critical views on Chinese politics and economics, and he frequently engaged with foreign journalists and diplomats. He was detained in February 2022 after meeting a Japanese diplomat at a Beijing hotel. The court's verdict was delivered in a closed-door hearing, with foreign media and diplomats barred from attending.
