Ascension Health is notifying approximately 5.6 million individuals of a ransomware attack in May 2024 that compromised their personal, medical, and payment data. The attack occurred on May 8, causing significant service disruptions that led hospitals to revert to downtime procedures and divert emergency services. By mid-June, the organization had restored most services and confirmed the exfiltration of protected health (PHI) and personally identifiable information (PII) from several servers. In a December 19 update, Ascension disclosed that its investigation had concluded and it would begin notifying affected individuals. Compromised data includes names, Social Security numbers, medical records, insurance details, payment information, and other sensitive identifiers, though the specific data involved varied by person.
