ShrinkLocker, discovered in May 2024, is a ransomware that uses older techniques like VBScript and built-in Windows features, making it simpler yet effective. Unlike modern ransomware that relies on complex encryption, ShrinkLocker modifies BitLocker configurations to encrypt drives, first checking if BitLocker is enabled and installing it if necessary. It then re-encrypts the system with a randomly generated password, which is uploaded to an attacker-controlled server. After rebooting, the user is prompted for the password to unlock their drive, with ransom instructions displayed on the BitLocker screen. The ransomware can spread quickly within a network, encrypting multiple systems in as little as 10 minutes per device, making it particularly appealing to individual attackers outside of large ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) operations.
