New data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that the UK's population grew by a record 906,000 people in the year ending June 2023, largely due to immigration. This figure is 22% higher than previous estimates, and the actual numbers may be even greater in some areas, as updated estimates for individual authorities are still pending. Middlesbrough, with a population of around 150,000, saw an influx of nearly 6,800 international migrants, representing about 4.4% of its total population. High immigration levels were also recorded in Coventry and Newham, London, where migration accounted for 4.3% and 3.9% of the population, respectively. The increase in immigration has placed additional pressure on housing, schools, and the NHS, particularly in areas like London where population density grew by up to 240 residents per square kilometre.
